Democratic senators in Congress have called for the Pentagon to provide details on the costs of the Iran war. This request, which includes 46 Democratic senators, was made in a letter to Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense, emphasizing the need for financial transparency.
Growing Dissatisfaction with Pentagon's Lack of Transparency
Senators have asked the Pentagon to provide Congress with a complete report on the war costs and related budget requests. While the Pentagon has provided some estimates, it has not submitted any report on the total cost of the war, including expenses for repairing U.S. military bases and replacing air and naval assets that have been damaged during the seven months of war.

This letter comes as senators are reviewing the Pentagon's request for an additional $67 billion budget. There is deep dissatisfaction among Democrats and some Republicans regarding the state of the war and the quality of information provided by the Pentagon. In their letter to Hegseth, senators noted that "despite your stated needs, you have repeatedly withheld fundamental information that previous administrations, both Republican and Democratic, provided to Congress and the public during times of war."
Criticism of Declared War Costs
According to a report released this week, Defense Department inspectors stated that the cost of the war is nearly $33 billion, and this figure does not include the costs of repairing damaged facilities. The Congressional Budget Office also estimated the cost of the war at $38 billion and concluded that this war has contributed to inflation in the United States.
Critics of these estimates believe that these figures cannot accurately reflect the true costs of the war. In a Senate Appropriations Committee meeting in late July, Hegseth announced the cost of the war in Iran as $37.5 billion, stating that this estimate includes salaries, operations, maintenance, and other "projected" costs through the end of the budget year.
Senators have also requested details on the Pentagon's $67 billion additional budget request and an audit of the expenditures from the nearly $34 billion budget approved last year by President Donald Trump. In the letter, senators expressed concern over the lack of public meetings or news reports regarding the war.
Compared to past wars, the letter states that the Pentagon has only justified the Iran war to Congress seven times, whereas during the Iraq war in 2003, then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld justified Congress 20 times. Hegseth has met with Pentagon reporters eight times since the war began in Iran in February, with his last meeting occurring in May.
Senators pointed out in their letter that in previous wars, the Pentagon regularly submitted additional budget requests and provided documentation that was over 100 pages long, while the Pentagon's $67 billion request is only seven pages and includes vague references to individual items.
Nevertheless, senators emphasized in their letter that "American taxpayers have the right to know where their money is going and how it is being spent."
