A new report from inspectors at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reveals that some migrants at the Florida detention center known as 'Alligator Alcatraz' were held in outdoor cages that were only slightly larger than phone booths. These cages were used for more than an hour at a time, and this is the first time a government entity has confirmed the existence of these cramped cages.
Inhumane Conditions at the Detention Center
The inspectors' report refers to instances where migrants are held in inhumane conditions and used as a form of punishment. According to the findings of this report, the use of such confined spaces is unconventional and does not align with standards of humane treatment. The report also criticizes the previous administration, particularly Donald Trump.

During a six-month period from July 17, 2025, to January 18, 2026, 79 migrants were held in these metal cages measuring 16 and 18 square feet. The average time spent in these cages was nearly one hour, with a maximum time close to two hours. Many migrants referred to these cages, which they called 'boxes', as a form of torture.
Immigration Policies and Criticism
The detention center, built by the Ron DeSantis administration in Florida, is part of a 287(g) agreement that allows local officials to perform specific duties related to immigration law enforcement. This center was closed in June 2026, and DeSantis stated that it was always intended to be temporary. However, the use of tent-like housing units and the vulnerability of migrants to harsh weather conditions faced severe criticism and led to numerous complaints.
Amnesty International, in a report from its visit to this center, highlighted the inhumane and unsanitary conditions, reporting situations that included overflowing toilets and exposure to insects. Migrants at this center were under extreme pressure and were placed in conditions where they could not move freely or even sit comfortably.
