Mike Johnson, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, admitted today that President Donald Trump's war against Iran and the resulting turmoil in the Strait of Hormuz have led to price increases for Americans. Johnson told reporters after a GOP meeting: "It is clear that gas and diesel prices are very high right now. The reason is quite simple and relates to the Strait of Hormuz. We need to stabilize trade in this region."
Economic Consequences of the War
Johnson stated that as soon as the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is resolved, prices will drop rapidly. He added: "Gas prices will decrease immediately. The cost of food will also decrease due to its connection with transportation costs." These remarks indicate that Republicans have lost hope for an end to the Iran war before the midterm elections and have concluded that the only way to address the economic consequences of this situation is to tackle it directly.

Increased Discontent with Republicans
A recent poll by The New York Times and Siena College showed that 38 percent of likely voters are satisfied with Trump's performance. On the economy, which is the most important issue for voters, this figure has dropped to 39 percent, and for the cost of living, it has fallen to 28 percent. Additionally, 31 percent of voters approved of Trump's handling of the Iran war. This poll has led to a concerning conclusion: voters now trust Democrats more than Republicans on economic issues (by 7 points), cost of living (by 8 points), and even the budget deficit (by 10 points).
Democrats are hoping to capitalize on this situation. Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader, described the Iran war as "a dangerous and costly war" initiated by Trump that has harmed Americans. Republicans have historically benefited from voter trust on economic issues, but this time it seems the situation has changed.
Johnson also addressed criticisms of the previous administration, stating: "We are not there yet. Changing the situation takes time. We are emerging from the very disastrous situation inherited from the Biden-Harris administration."
Economic reports indicate that the Iran war has accounted for more than a third of this year's inflation increase. Additionally, the yield on 10-year government bonds reached 5.04 percent, the highest rate since 2007.
