Nile Gold, a Curse for Sudan: Agricultural Lands at Risk of Destruction

د دلارام موسوی · 2 دقیقه · 0

War and poverty in Sudan have turned agricultural lands into a wasteland that can no longer provide food. Pollution from gold mining has become a public crisis.

In Abu Hamad, alongside the Nile, gardens and green fields once hosted dates, citrus fruits, and grains that met the food needs of eastern Sudan's cities. But today, this land has changed in a catastrophic way.

Trees have been cut down, agricultural lands have been destroyed, and farms have turned into stores and commercial places. Around this city, there are more than 700 gray waste piles that are slowly poisoning the soil and climate of the region. These piles are the toxic remnants of gold mining that began around 2008 and have significantly expanded in the last six years.

Public Health Crisis in the Shadow of Mining

Informal gold mining in Sudan has turned into a public crisis. The chemicals used in this process have not only contaminated the soil and water but have also harmed the health of the residents in these areas. With rising poverty and lack of employment, people have turned to these dangerous activities, unaware of their horrific consequences.

This situation clearly illustrates a disaster occurring in the shadow of war and economic instability. Agricultural lands that once played a key role in feeding the country are now on the brink of destruction, and this issue has become a serious challenge for Sudan's food future. If this trend continues, not only future generations but also the current lives of the people will be at risk.

Sudan is grappling with multiple economic and social challenges, and this crisis stemming from gold mining is just one sign of a larger crisis that the country faces. Can Sudan navigate through this crisis safely, or should we expect a larger disaster?
