While the younger generation has leaned towards conservatism, especially during Trump's presidency, political groups affiliated with the Democrats across the United States are working to attract these young voters before the November midterm elections.
Activity on College Campuses
On the first day of the fall semester at California State University, Northridge, student organizers stood in front of the student union with signs reading "Stylish Voters." They filled a bright pink wagon with desserts and information related to voting for the upcoming general elections in November. Despite the 104-degree temperature, dozens of students joined the gathering and took steps to register.
One student told organizer Dzyan Tran that they did not intend to vote because they were disillusioned with politics. Tran spoke to them about the importance of civic engagement in democracy and reminded them that some elections are won by a margin of only 400 votes. Ultimately, the student thanked Tran and scanned a QR code with their phone to receive more information about voting.
Looking Ahead to the Elections
Democratic-supporting groups have clearly recognized that youth participation in elections can be decisive. They are trying to capture the attention of new generations by holding creative and engaging campaigns and are working to transform the disillusionment of young people into enthusiasm for voting.
