The 10-year yield on U.S. Treasury bonds surpassed 5 percent for the first time in 2023 on Monday. This increase coincided with rising oil prices and a new national record for diesel fuel prices. Oil prices rose after a vital pipeline was shut down by Saudi Arabia and negotiations regarding the future of the Strait of Hormuz were delayed.
Rising Oil and Diesel Prices
The international benchmark for oil, Brent crude, reached over $109, while U.S. crude oil was traded near $105 per barrel. The East-West pipeline, which is a key energy supply route, has gained more importance due to the ongoing deadlock in the Strait of Hormuz. In recent days, ship traffic from the Strait of Hormuz has barely reached double digits.

Chris Wright, the U.S. Secretary of Energy, stated that he does not have a specific timeline for reopening the pipeline but is in contact with his Saudi counterpart and believes this issue will be clarified soon. On Friday, the Saudi Ministry of Energy announced that the pipeline was closed as a precautionary measure, and the timeline for reopening is unclear.
Analysts at Lloyds Bank pointed to uncertainty regarding the duration of this closure and stated that it will have significant impacts on global supply and energy prices. Additionally, a meeting between Iran and Gulf Cooperation Council countries regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which was scheduled for Monday, was postponed at Riyadh's request.
On Monday, the national average price for regular gasoline rose to $4.31 per gallon, and diesel prices reached $6.23. These price increases may lead to higher public costs and pressure on the economy. Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG, emphasized that rising diesel prices could continue to be an inflationary issue in the coming months.
