U.S. Financial Markets Rise After Federal Reserve Rate Hike

U.S. stock and bond markets grew with the Federal Reserve's rate hike and falling oil prices. Major U.S. stock indices saw significant increases.

U.S. stock and bond markets surged on Thursday following the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike aimed at controlling inflation. At the start of trading, the S&P 500 index rose by 1.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite saw a 1.6% increase. Additionally, the Dow Jones Industrial Average continued its rise with a gain of 450 points or 0.9%. The Russell 2000 index, which tracks small and mid-sized companies, also increased by 1.5%.

Falling Oil Prices and Bond Market Gains

This rise in the stock market coincided with growth in the bond market, leading to a decrease in their yields. Oil prices fell for the second consecutive day, with U.S. crude dropping below $100 per barrel for the first time since September 11. Brent crude also decreased to $101, down from $109 just two days prior.

Positive Unemployment Claims Report

The new unemployment claims report also brought positive news, showing that the number of jobless claims has reached its lowest level since July. However, this data may be an anomaly due to last week's short holiday. With rising prices, the yield on U.S. Treasury bonds also fell. After the 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.02%, it decreased to 4.96%. The 30-year yield also dropped to 5.31%.

Global bond yields also fell after the Bank of England decided not to raise interest rates. These market changes are attributed to increased confidence in the Federal Reserve and its new chairman, Kevin Varash. Varash's press conference was praised, highlighting his clarity and confidence.

The drop in oil prices is largely attributed to a report indicating that President Donald Trump is likely to discuss the Iran war with Gulf leaders at next week's United Nations General Assembly. Additionally, Saudi Arabia is reportedly rebuilding its East-West oil pipeline capacity, which had been shut down following an attack on this critical asset.
