Kim Kardashian in the trailer for the eighth season of 'The Kardashians' announced her new illness called 'esophagitis.' In one of the clips released from this trailer, she said: "I have something called esophagitis." This trailer was released on Thursday, and in it, Kris Jenner, Kardashian's mother, also expressed concern and said that this diagnosis "makes me want to cry."
Definition and Symptoms of Esophagitis
According to reports, esophagitis refers to inflammation of the lining of the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food and drink from the mouth to the stomach. In the trailer, Kardashian is shown resting in a hospital bed and connected to devices. Someone off-camera asks if this illness is the same as what her father, Robert Kardashian, had. Robert Kardashian passed away in 2003 at the age of 59 due to esophageal cancer.

Types of Esophagitis
Dr. Stuart Spechler, a gastroenterologist at Baylor University Medical Center and a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, stated that there are different types of esophagitis, and Kardashian did not specify which type she has. He explained: "The most common type is reflux esophagitis, which is a complication of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)." In these patients, the mechanisms that usually prevent stomach acid from moving up into the esophagus are defective, allowing acid to return to the esophagus and irritate and damage it.
Risk Factors and Diagnosis
Common symptoms include heartburn and food regurgitation. Some patients with reflux esophagitis develop Barrett's esophagus, a condition in which chronic damage from acid harms the normal lining of the esophagus. Dr. Spechler noted that this condition is a risk factor for developing a type of esophageal cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma. However, he emphasized that esophagitis is only a small risk factor for esophageal cancer.
Robert J. Kardashian Health Center
In 2019, the Kardashian family helped establish the Robert J. Kardashian Health Center for Esophageal Diseases at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This center was established as "a center for treatment, research, and education from a comprehensive and patient-centered perspective." Kardashian stated in a press release: "We are proud to partner with UCLA Health in honor of our father to create the best program of its kind in the country." She also added: "We hope to save lives and help the community in memory of our father."
