Senator Mitch McConnell returned to the U.S. Senate on Monday and cast his first vote after more than three months away. In a statement, he said: "Today, I am casting my first vote since the bad fall I had in June. I am really looking forward to being back on the floor of the U.S. Senate and seeing my colleagues again."
McConnell's Recovery Status
McConnell cast his vote to advance the nomination of Matthew Byrne as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Ohio. He stated that his recovery process has been "a long and frustrating journey" and has been complicated by "residual effects of polio from childhood." McConnell added: "I’m not back to 100%, but I assured Leader Thune that while I continue with physical therapy, I will try to be present for tough votes."

Challenges of Absence and Return
McConnell had been absent since mid-June when he fell at his home and was briefly unconscious. This led to speculation and pressure from the public and Democratic Governor of Kentucky to prove his health. In July, McConnell cited his reluctance to share vulnerabilities due to aging as the reason for the delay in disclosing the cause of his absence. In response to reporters, he said: "After two years, two decades of dodging your questions, I wasn’t sure how many of you would be here today. So I’m glad to see you. It’s time to get back to work to finish the job for this Congress. I’m here to work on the agriculture bill."
McConnell has faced challenges due to health issues in recent years. In 2023, he fell at a dinner event, leading to hospitalization and a diagnosis of a concussion and broken ribs. That same year, McConnell stopped mid-sentence several times while speaking to reporters. McConnell was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984, and Republican representative from Kentucky, Andy Barr, has been recognized as the Republican candidate for his seat in the state.
