Moderna has launched the first influenza vaccine using mRNA technology, named mFlusiva, for individuals aged 50 and older in the United States. The mFlusiva vaccine is specifically designed for individuals aged 50 and older. Emalah Tubo, an independent pharmacist in Ohio, emphasized, "If you haven't celebrated your 50th birthday yet, this vaccine is not suitable for you." The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued traditional authorization for individuals aged 50 to 64 and accelerated authorization for those aged 65 and older. Individuals who do not wish to receive the mRNA vaccine can opt for the traditional influenza vaccine.

How the mFlusiva Vaccine Works and Its Distinction
This vaccine uses a small piece of genetic code to train the immune system instead of using an inactivated version of the virus. This method helps the immune system recognize and combat the influenza virus. Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist, explains that this vaccine can be produced faster than traditional vaccines, taking only two to three months to manufacture, while traditional vaccines typically take six months.
According to data released from a phase three clinical trial, the mFlusiva vaccine is approximately 27% more effective than traditional vaccines in preventing laboratory-confirmed illnesses. Over 40,000 adults aged 50 and older participated in this trial across 11 countries, including the United States.
Insurance Coverage and Vaccine Cost
Although the mFlusiva vaccine is arriving at pharmacies without an official recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is expected that most private insurers will cover the cost of this vaccine. The out-of-pocket cost for this vaccine is about $171 per dose, but it may be as low as $154 at some pharmacies.
