The Donald Trump administration announced an agreement with Denmark that allows the United States to have permanent control over the security of Greenland. President Trump stated in a post on the social media platform Truth Social: "The United States of America has signed an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland that gives us permanent control over the security and other needs of Greenland and addresses all our concerns."
Details of the agreement and security barriers
Trump emphasized that this agreement costs the United States nothing and described it as "an agreement with an unlimited lifespan." According to him, this agreement includes a ban on any military bases or presence from the United States' rivals in Greenland, and no sensitive investments can be made without written approval from the United States. A U.S. State Department official explicitly stated that this agreement specifically prohibits any base presence or non-NATO forces in Greenland.

The strategic importance of Greenland
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, stated in a statement: "Greenland will always be part of the strategic defense sphere of North America, and any rival will be excluded from it and its surrounding areas." He added: "This agreement permanently and completely addresses our national security concerns in Greenland." Trump also announced that his administration will work with Greenland to rapidly develop a significant military presence in appropriate areas of Greenland.
Leaders from Denmark and Greenland also stated in a statement that this agreement is expected to be signed next week in connection with the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Mette Frederiksen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, emphasized in a statement that this agreement does not grant the United States sovereignty over Greenland and described it as an agreement that strengthens common security in the Arctic region and the North Atlantic.
Jessie Frederik Nielsen, the head of the Greenland government, considered this agreement beneficial for all and said: "We are pleased to be on the verge of signing an agreement that guarantees and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, and the Western alliance."
A U.S. State Department official noted that this agreement will remain in full effect even if Greenland becomes a fully independent country from Denmark. This agreement allows the United States to take any necessary actions to secure and defend the American continent.
The agreement to establish a U.S. military presence in Greenland comes after Trump's threats in January to seize the country. While the President later downplayed military threats against Greenland, his administration continued its efforts to gain power in the region.
Trump's approach to Greenland has angered Greenlanders, who have shown in polls that they are strongly opposed to American annexation. Despite this strong opposition, the Greenland government has participated alongside Denmark and the United States in negotiations to find solutions to security concerns.
