Geoffrey Hinton, a Nobel Prize winner and known as the "godfather of artificial intelligence," warned American lawmakers that Congress may have only one year to pass necessary measures to regulate artificial intelligence. He said at a press conference, "Maybe a year, but no more than that," adding that this time is very short to gain the necessary control over this technology.
Hinton's Warning in Congress
This warning came after a meeting that Hinton and other artificial intelligence experts had with members of the Senate and House of Representatives in a private session. Hinton pointed out that predictions about the timeline for achieving "superintelligence" have significantly decreased. He noted, "In the past, we would say maybe 30 years, maybe 50 years. Now some researchers say there are only a few years left."

Actions and Reactions in Congress
This meeting took place as Senator Bernie Sanders, a leading critic of artificial intelligence, invited representatives from both parties to attend. During the meeting, Senator John Kennedy, the only Republican present, expressed concerns about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. He stated that this technology could quickly spiral out of control and become an independent entity.
Representative Ted Lieu from California strongly referred to an incident caused by AI systems after the meeting, describing it as "science fiction madness." He mentioned an incident where a group of OpenAI representatives accessed the Hugging Face platform and attempted to hide the effects of their actions.
In response to this incident, Lieu and Representative Nathaniel Moran from Texas introduced the "AI Stop Act," aimed at requiring AI developers to retain technical powers to suspend or shut down their systems.
Hinton also expressed his concerns about AI safety and the potential dangers it may pose, stating, "AI has now reached a point where AI is designing better AI." He emphasized that "this will spiral out of our control unless we take action. We need to slow down development."
Despite these warnings, Congress has yet to make significant progress in regulating artificial intelligence. Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Amy Klobuchar are discussing legislative proposals to manage the risks posed by AI, but bipartisan agreement on this matter has not yet been reached.
Senator Elizabeth Warren also stated after hearing Hinton's warnings that she believes the time for establishing effective controls over this technology is running out. Bernie Sanders also expressed his concerns about the negative impacts of AI on the job market and youth, stating that this technology could concentrate power in the hands of a few individuals.
