Joanna Wietzrek from Australia apologized after winning the Hyrox competition in China due to an unfortunate incident. She decided to withdraw from the competition.

Joanna Wietzrek, a 24-year-old Australian athlete, apologized on Thursday after winning the Hyrox competition in Beijing, China, for experiencing an involuntary bowel movement during the race. Wietzrek stated that she should have exited the course during the competition and considered the incident a mistake.

Details of the Incident in the Competition

The incident occurred in the women's event in the age category of 16 to 24 years on Saturday. Wietzrek stated that she had not felt any signs of illness before the competition and therefore did not expect any problems to arise. In a statement, she said: "I want to sincerely apologize to the people of China, my competitors, the spectators, and the organizers of Hyrox. I was completely healthy and ready at the start of the competition and had no reason to expect illness. Looking back, I regret my decision to continue the race. I know I should have made a different choice and I take responsibility for continuing."

Consequences of the Incident and Next Steps

Wietzrek recorded a time of 1:01:23, placing her at the top of her category, but she requested to "retroactively withdraw from the competition." She said: "Given the circumstances, I decided to retroactively withdraw from the competition and forfeit the points I earned." The incident garnered significant attention, and one of the founders of Hyrox, Maurice Fioreste, also apologized on Sunday for the incident, stating that the organizers should have intervened immediately.

Wietzrek also stated: "I know my actions have had an impact beyond myself, and I sincerely apologize to everyone affected. I will learn from this experience and carry these lessons with me. I also remind myself that life is more than competition and we must know when to step back from competing." She also expressed gratitude for the support she received from people and mentioned that she currently needs time to rest and take care of herself and her family.
