Bailey Lynn Rios, a 36-year-old woman, has been charged with second-degree murder following a fatal accident that occurred on Tuesday in Los Angeles. The collision resulted in the deaths of two bus passengers. Authorities announced on Thursday that Rios was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the incident.
Details of the Accident and Its Consequences
Rios was driving her 2004 Ford Expedition when she illegally veered into oncoming traffic on a busy street and collided with a vehicle after running a red light; she then struck the city bus. After the crash, Rios was rescued by paramedics and taken to a local hospital. According to police information, drugs were found in Rios's vehicle, and she was driving under the influence of drugs.

Officials also noted that Rios was driving at a speed significantly above the legal limit and entered oncoming traffic due to approaching a red light. One passenger was completely ejected from the bus, while another was partially thrown from it.
News Helicopter Crash and Its Casualties
During the news coverage of the accident, a news helicopter crashed near the scene, resulting in the deaths of reporter Eliana Morris and pilot George Marchini. A pedestrian named Eddie Gutierrez Mejia also lost his life in this incident. This tragedy has caused profound shock and sorrow in the Chatsworth and Los Angeles communities.
Local officials expressed their condolences in response to this tragedy and stated that it was a preventable disaster. Nathan Hochman, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, said, "This case is particularly tragic because it is a preventable disaster." Rios has also been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and reckless driving.
Rios faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. It is also unclear whether she has an attorney who can speak on her behalf. Court records show that she was convicted in 2022 for driving with a suspended license, and previous charges related to driving under the influence of drugs and other matters have been dismissed.
Rios is scheduled to appear in court on Friday and is currently being held on a four million dollar bail.
